At the age of 14, Kenshin left Hiko and was brought in by the Choshu(sp?) faction to work as a hitokiri (assassin). Up through the age of 18 he killed many political members of the Shogunate, carving his way to the Meiji era. Kenshin makes a promise to cease his manslaughter after the revolution, and to live a new life a wanderer.
Immediately after the Meiji revolution Kenshin Himura, aka Battousai the Manslayer(Hitokiri Battousai), disappeared. He was not seen again until 10 years later in Tokyo where he met Kamiya Karou, and now lives with her at her dojo. Kenshin still carries his ideals as a wandering swordsman, and does not slay human beings. With that Kenshin tossed aside his daisho in favor of his sakabatou (reverse-blade sword), forever living his life to protect others instead of slaying them.
"Once they're dead there is no difference between them. They are nothing but the dead." - Shinta
"Then I will...on behalf of the heavens, kill!" - Kenshin
"Now I will deliver Tenchu (heavenly punishment)." - Kenshin
"I'll let you have a taste of why they call me Battousai the Manslayer." - Kenshin
"Now that I've said I'll kill you, your death tonight has been assured." - Kenshin
“New eras don’t come about because of swords, they’re created by the people who wield them.” - Kenshin
"People before us are suffering. Many are miserable, I can't just leave them alone!" - Kenshin
"I personally have the feeling that I never knew until now what happiness was." - Kenshin
"A sword is a weapon, the art of swordsmanship is learning how to kill, that is the truth. What she says is sweet and innocent talk that only those whose hands have never been stained with the blood of men can believe. But, to tell you the truth, I much prefer her sweet and innocent talk over the truth, indeed I do!" - Kenshin
“We once fought together for an ideal with our swords. It wasn't for power or for glory, but to create a peaceful world where people could live without fear. And, if you should forget about that, then what did we fight the revolution for?” - Kenshin
"I thought I was swinging my sword to protect Mitsurugi... to protect the happiness of helpless people; but I was only trying to convince myself that this is true." - Kenshin
"I won't live a long life, I've come to accept that. You waste your time worrying about it more than I do." - Kenshin
"I can remember it all... I thought I was fighting a war that would end all wars, but the only things that have changed are the battlefields... the sorrow I feel is the same. I'm tired of carrying it." - Kenshin
"I'm sorry. It was simply a passing thought. I was thinking how I would have prefered to have met you under different circumstances. Perhaps as friends." - Kenshin
“Am I afraid of Hiko Seijuro? Of the promise of death he represents? Am I afraid of death? The chaos of the revolution stripped me of my desire for life so why? Why am I afraid of death? I must not fear! I.. have to... stay... alive!” - Kenshin
"I thought I made it clear, I have no desire to take anyone's life, no matter what the reason. And also, I'm sure I'm not the devil!" - Kenshin
"You can die at any time. But living takes true courage! I'm living too, to repent for all the lives I took." - Kenshin
"You led many swordsmen down a bloody path. And you manipulated an innocent boy's heart! For that, I'll make sure you see living hell!" - Kenshin
"No one can take away your pride." - Kenshin
